Vigour of Dragons and Horses
Horses, the creatures seen racing amid a trail of dust and smoke across ancient battlefields, have served as a metaphor for robustness, vigour and wild unrestraint since time immemorial. Emerging from a baptism of blood and fire through the ages, horses have come to represent the spirit of strength along with the evolving history of mankind.
For Chinese, horses encapsulate the soul of the Yellow River, exemplifying the spirit of strivings and constant self-strengthening associated with descendants of the Chinese race. “Vigor of Dragons and Horses”, an idiom that equates vigor with the creatures described, signifies loyalty, nobility, courage and resilience.
Since the ancient times, white jade has been treasured by Oriental collectors for its rarity. Its preciousness was highlighted by Sima Qian in his writings Biographies of Lian Po and Lin Xiangru, Records of the Grand Historian. The fine texture and tenacity of white jade make it the toughest of amongst various jades and an ideal carving material for craftsmen.
Presented by Tiancheng International, this White Jade “Double Horses” Ornament showcases the exquisite carving of finely-textured white nephrite jade to convey the dynamic beauty of two stallions with a dragon-like vigour. The equine images are sublimely portrayed, giving vivid expression to the meaning of “Vigour of Dragons and Horses.”
