The necklace composed of one hundred and eight translucent icy jadeite beads, divided by four fotou (Buddha's head) beads of amethysts and decorative materials, the fotou at the back connected to a gourd-shaped fotouta (Buddha's head stupa) of icy jadeite of similar colour and translucency, suspending fringes of amethyst beads (back cloud), length approximately 1240mm.
Jadeites measuring approximately 13.43 to 11.60 - 11.63 x 12.78mm.
BUDDHIST BEADS Buddhist prayer beads, also known as thought beads or counting beads, are a devotional tool that is used when reciting the holy names of Buddha and Bodhisattvas or counting mantras to restrain one’s heart for religious cultivation. In traditional Chinese culture, many non-Buddhist laymen are adorned with prayer beads too, attesting to the popular belief that wearing them can bring peace and safety. According to religious, the number of beads used in Buddhist devotional practices varies, as they bear different significances. Most commonly, 108 beads are used to symbolise the achievement of 108 samaya and elimination of three mental sufferings. The use of 54 beads, 42 beads, 21 beads and 14 beads, for instance, signifies the different practices of Bodhisattvas. Ultimately, they all serve the purpose of sutra recital.
