Akoya Pearls
Cultured mainly in the prefectures of Mie, Kumamoto and Ehime around the Seto Inland Sea region, Akoya pearls are widely regarded as Japanese saltwater pearls. Distinguished by their rich rose colour, brilliant lustre and considerable size, they are cherished by Asian collectors for the unique Oriental charm they possess.
Akoya pearls are naturally coated with a fine layer of crystalline calcium carbonate due to cultivation and the temperature change of water. They are highly prized for their lustre and rich colour ranging from white, cream to silver blue. The average pearl size measures from 4 mm to 8 mm in diameter. Only a rare handful of them are 9 mm to 10 mm. However, the larger the pearl size, the more severe will be the nucleus rejection, which can compromise pearl quality. With all other quality factors being equal, the bigger the pearl, the more valuable it is. The price difference of Akoya pearls of 7 mm and 8 mm may double even there is only a slight difference in size. Japan’s pearl industry awards a “Hanadama” (spherical flowers) grading to the finestquality white Akoya pearls, while blue pearls of the highest quality are labeled “Madama” and the yellow ones, “Akoya empress.” An Akoya pearl has to fulfill a number of conditions to earn a place in this classification. It must have a diameter of more than 6 mm, its nacre coating must be more than 0.4mm thick; it must have a very strong lustre; it must be flawless or have no more than three minor blemishes, and it must be perfectly rounded, allowing deviation of less than 5%. Pearls of the highest lustre are described with the term, “Aurora.” Along with the decreasing output of Akoya pearls, it has become exceptionally difficult to come across a newly harvested pearl that bears any of the above prestigious grades.
Under the Japanese pearl culture, “Hanadama” pearls are synonymous with top-quality Japanese pearls. Aurora “Hanadama” pearls with a rating of above 90 for lustre have been described as “Ten-Nyo” (meaning heavenly nymphs in Japanese), suggesting that they are as beautiful as the heavenly maidens and therefore, are one-of-a-kind treasure.
Tiancheng International is proud to present a double stranded Akoya pearl necklace (Lot 123), with diameters of pearls ranging from 9 to 9.5 mm, making them a rarity within the Akoya category. Pearl Science Laboratory of Japan crowned “Aurora Madama” to the pearls for their superior quality and good cleanness, glorifying their pure beauty.
