STAR CORUNDUM

Star corundum is a type of corundum that exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism, caused by reflections from tiny, needle-like inclusions that are oriented in several specific directions. The finest star corundum is semi-transparent, of distinct star which is centred on the top of the stone and visible from a reasonable distance under luminescent light. Asterism mostly appears in white, it is rare and valuable if star presents thesame colour as the body colour of the stone.

Star corundum can only be found in small percentages of corundum on the market. As faceted corundum typically sells for more per carat than star corundum fashioned as a cabochon, only those of exceptional body colour and outstanding asterism are left untreated and sold as stars.

Like faceted corundum, star corundum has wide ranges of spectrum colours; whilst the most appreciated colours are red and blue, the same as the colours most valued in non-phenomenal corundum. Purple and white star sapphires become very popular as more collectors find them even rarer than the demanding red and blue.

Tiancheng International is pleased to offer several star corundum jewelleries of various body colours in this season, including a 5.93-carat star ruby ring (Lot 260) of very rare ‘Fuchsia Red’ body colour with a crisp ‘Red Star’, an 8.05-carat white star sapphire (Lot 259) accented by a unique mounting, an impressively-sized 32.54-carat star sapphire ring (Lot 36) as well as a 17.11-carat purple star sapphire ring (Lot 29) originated from the well-known Sri Lanka.
