Qing’s Hetian White Jade ‘Guanyin’
Hetian jade is a type of nephrite traditionally associated with the Hetian region of Xinjiang, from which it originates.
Following suppression of the Dzungar uprising during the Qing dynasty in 1755, Xinjiang was officially incorporated into the map of Chinese territories. The event not only opened up the jade transportation routes but also paved the way for a massive influx of Hetian jade into the hinterland. Correspondingly, the art of jade carving took off rapidly, ushering ancient Chinese jade history to a new height of development. During the Qing era, nephrite jade carving was a delicate art form, highlighted by a fusion of traditional techniques and artistic styles with foreign aesthetic ideals unique to that period.
