Hao's childhood experiencemade him more acute of life and death and it has become a common subject matter in his works. 'Shadowy Figure' explores the fragility and dark side of life. The portrait resembles a medieval knight or preacher from western classical context, while the background of painting was
drawn with delicate Chinese classical technique of meticulous brushworks. The artist created an atmospheric work with his adept use of colours and medium and careful composition of fine details.
